Step runners are the components responsible for executing each step in a workflow. The step runner receives a request from Torq to execute a step with certain arguments and environment variables and, using an adapter (either Kubernetes or Docker), schedules the execution and retrieves the step output.
Software services are commonly deployed in distributed environments, so different steps in the same workflow can be executed in those environments by deploying a step runner in each of them.
Torq provides a secure hosted step runner service in its public cloud. This step runner can execute steps that use cloud-to-cloud communication and leverage public APIs. Steps that require access to private VPCs or data centers will require deploying a self-hosted step runner in these environments.
